Navigating through Conflict and Gaining Wisdom with Frankincense

This week I found myself observing dialogue that was a response to what I posted on social media in defense for Israel. As I find myself immersed in the virtual discussions surrounding this complex issue, I am reminded of the wisdom imparted by Talmudic teachings.

The Talmudic Perspective on Conflict and Self-Defense

The Talmud, a cornerstone of Jewish tradition and scholarship, offers valuable insights into how individuals should approach conflicts and, particularly, the concept of self-defense when facing threats. One crucial principle within the Talmud is "pikuach nefesh," which emphasizes the sanctity of human life and permits actions to protect oneself when in danger.

In the context of the current conflict, where Israel faces potential security threats, some argue that Israel has the right to defend itself.   However, it's essential to recognize that opinions on this matter vary widely, both within and outside the Jewish community.

The essential oil that I have chosen this week may resonate with this these thoughts.

Frankincense in Jewish Tradition

Frankincense resin, known as "levonah" in Hebrew, has a rich history within the Jewish Torah, Talmud, and Siddur.

In the Torah, frankincense resin is mentioned as one of the sacred ingredients used in the incense offering within the Tabernacle and later the Temple. Its fragrant smoke was believed to symbolize prayers rising towards the heavens, connecting the material and the divine.  Within the Talmud and Siddur, frankincense continues to hold significance. Its use during rituals and prayers represents a connection to the past, a reverence for tradition, and a means of creating an atmosphere of sacredness and contemplation.

As aromatherapist we use aroma of frankincense of the essential oil, due to its ability to transport us to a place of spiritual reflection, reminding us of our ancient roots and the enduring wisdom of our tradition.
